I have an old 17" CRT at home and as I was schlepping it around I thought "geez it would be great to set this up as a second display." This was back in 2006.
To do this you need to drop in a second video card into your PC. Minor surgery unless you go with an external funky box but nothing crazy . . . or so I thought!
I have since upgraded Vista to the retail version and I also bought a Matrox Millenium PCI video card for $10 on eBay. I dropped it in and as I booted up my ATI display card was disabled. The error mesage was that the ATI driver was not compatible with the system VGA driver.
Hmmm . . you would think that this ATI driver (x550) would at least be compatible with a core Vista VGA driver - although flashback to my initial interaction with this video card on the Sony beast. Ouch!
My next take is to download an actual Matrox Millenium driver and see if the ATI driver is compatible with that. Stay tuned.
