It seems that Father's Day is upon us and once again and we are looking forward to the handmade paperweights from pre-school and the popsicle stick picture frames.
When I was little I made my Dad a rock - well, I painted a rock. It had red and white stripes running down it. "A pretty neat paperweight" I thought at the time, and my Dad had a grand collection of papers on his giant roll-top desk. A couple of years ago I remember seeing it on his desk, some 35 years later, still holding down the papers.
Today I have less papers - files galore, but not many papers, so I think the paperweight as a Father's Day gift has lost some of its function.
But as we Dads know, it's not about function, and if I do get a paperweight from my kids this year I will treasure it and find some papers, somewhere, to put under it.
