My take is that she is underestimating the value that consumers put on industrial design and the value of brand.

Agree, agree. Apple brand, design, and simplicity trumps value.
OTOH, The Sandisk audio player is chock-full of features ; back-lit display, good FM, and real value.
But navigating the folders/files takes serious learning.
