I received a quick response from TiVo based on a previous post.
In that post I suggested that DVRs can becomne much more family friendly by creating password protected "zones" where kids content (Barney) can be saved separate from parent's content (The Sopranos).
TiVo has a password feature today that enables any shows rated "n" to be password protected. Well, there you go. I'd prefer separate "zones" that can be completely customized (like Windows XP logons) but this is definitely a good way to keep content protected.
Speaking of TiVo, I've been eyeing the new HD TiVo/DirectTV box. It records up to 30 hours of high def content or 200 hours of regular TV. As a refernce, an HD DirectTV tuner box will set you back $400 or so it's a $600 delta to get the TiVo addition.
Not cheap but really the only way to go if you have an HDTV and DirectTV. Otherwise, all your HD content will get "dumbed down" to regular TV resolution when recorded by your DVR.
Speaking of DVRs in general, here is a good blog on the subject.
I seem to remember news about Tivo and directv cutting ties, or something aong those lines, but this subscription-only story:

is the only one I can find.
