I've been in search of parts to build my smart irrigation system (see earlier post) and came across a company called Digital Sun. These guys seem to have what I am looking for.
However, emails and phone message have not been answered. They won a Demo Conference award in 2003, but perhaps they have "returned to the soil."
Not returned to the soil. Working with major consumer irrigation brands to bring it to market. Will bloom soon.

I too have been looking for such a residential wireless PC-based system to measure soil moisture and have the computer warn me of areas that are drying out. My critical water-sensitive shrubs are scattered so wireless is important. However, the system needs to be able to detect soil moisture at different depths in order to be useful. Azaleas, rhododendrons and other shallow rooted shrubs/trees have roots in the top 4" of the soil only so, being able to check at that depth is important. Otherwise, for example, the shrub can dry out while the sensor still says that the soil is still moist (but at a depth of -say- one foot).
