I too have been looking for such a residential wireless PC-based system to measure soil moisture and have the computer warn me of areas that are drying out. My critical water-sensitive shrubs are scattered so wireless is important. However, the system needs to be able to detect soil moisture at different depths in order to be useful. Azaleas, rhododendrons and other shallow rooted shrubs/trees have roots in the top 4" of the soil only so, being able to check at that depth is important. Otherwise, for example, the shrub can dry out while the sensor still says that the soil is still moist (but at a depth of -say- one foot).
