Since I'm on this theme I thought I would share what most Dad's with kids and PCs already know - kids love to print. And print. And print. There is something cool about clicking on the screen and having real paper come out.
My son, who is about to turn five, prints a variety of cool things that are free on the web. The kids web sites have become wise to the printing phenomenon. Mostly, he prints coloring pages but recently he has found cut out pages that he can print, cut, tape together, and create little 3D scenes from movies like Beauty and the Beast. He's also become very fond of color by numbers.
The best printing sites are off of standard kid sites like Nick Jr., Disney, and PBS Kids, but there are also less commercial sites such as this one.
As you know, printers are cheap. I'm using an Epson C82 that I picked up for $39 (after rebate). Paper is cheap as well (a ream from Office Depot will last a while). Ink, however, will set you back. That being said, printing projects for kids, as opposed to printing photos, uses little ink. Someone from HP once told me that printing an 8x10 photo uses about 10x the amount of ink as a regular printed page. So if you keep it kids stuff it should last a while.
