Digital Dad Usability Score - DDUS?
As I come across a variety of these gadgets and gear I am always thinking aboit how easy or difficult the item is to use or how difficult the task is to accomplish. So much technology is developed without thinking through how the consumer will actually interact with it, and what seems obvious to the engineer developing it becomes completely confusing to everyone else.
In my head I have what I would call, for lack of a better term, a Digital Dad Usability Score, or DDUS. It ranges from 1 to 5, with the range going from:
1 - usable by a 4 year old (or a really advanced 2.5 year old, like my daughter :))
2 - usable by a non-tech spouse, parent, grandparent
3 - usable by someone who can also set the clock on a VCR
4 - usable by someone who knows how to set up an email account on their PC
5 - engineering degree required, master's preferred
I may use this score from time to time as I run across items of note. For example, my cordless phone has a DDUS of 1, an iPOD has a DDUS of 2, while the Creative Wireless Soundblaster has a DDUS of 3. Connecting an iPOD to a Nissan Quest would have a DDUS of 4, while re-assigning ID3 tag versions to your digital music library so your iTunes library shows up properly in your Creative Wireless Soundblaster is definitely a DDUS of 5. Definitely.
